No admission charge? How can you do that? And why do you do that?
We’re asked these questions a lot at the Port Royal Sound Foundation. First, let’s address the question why do you do that? It’s simple, really. We want everyone to come visit. And come back. Preferably with a friend or family member. The more you visit, the more you’ll learn about the Port Royal Sound Area and the more you’ll appreciate this wonderful resource. You know the adage, “If you appreciate it, you’ll take care of it.” We don’t want an admission fee to deter anyone from visiting and learning.
So how can we do that? We do it through generous donations and volunteers!
The amazing exhibits at the Maritime Center were funded through a capital campaign that ended in 2014. Many communities, organizations and individuals contributed to that campaign. Now, financial gifts support operations. That includes keeping the exhibits running and up-to-date; hosting educational field trips; hosting regular programs; payroll; supplies; electricity; and all the other monthly expenses. Your donation makes a difference! Donate here.
The Foundation is always seeking grant opportunities. If you are of an opportunity you believe we should be pursuing, please let us know! To view some of the grants awarded to the Foundation, click here.
The folks you see inside the Maritime Center when you visit are volunteers. They have a passion for the environment around them and wish to keep it pristine. They are trained to answer your questions and make your visit a memory-making experience. They hope you’ll develop – or deepen – an affinity for this unique ecosystem that is the Port Royal Sound Area. To learn more about volunteering, click here!
